I don’t know about you, but for me every day is pretty much “Day of the Horse.” However, if you’re going by the calendar of obscure American holidays, the official National Day of the Horse is Dec. 13. With that in mind, here are some ideas for how to celebrate:

  1. Take a trail ride or go for a hack with your horse.
  2. Donate money or supplies to a reputable nonprofit horse rescue organization.
  3. Volunteer your time at a horse-related nonprofit. Consider therapeutic riding schools as well as rescues.
  4. Watch a horse movie. May we suggest “Phar Lap,” “Seabiscuit,” “Secretariat,” “The Black Stallion,” “National Velvet,” or “Sylvester”?
  5. Wear a clothing item or piece of jewelry that shows you’re a horse person. Boots and breeches to the supermarket anyone?
  6. Give your horse an extended grooming session. But only if he likes that sort of thing.
  7. Update your horse’s halter, and add a name plate.
  8. Buy your horse a fancy bridle brow band. You know, just because it looks pretty.
  9. Post something positive on your favorite online horse forum or Facebook group. We all know horse people are opinionated, and controversial conversations can get negative really quick. For today, try to focus on the positive and offer your horse-crazy peers encouragement and support.
  10. Share your horse with someone who’s otherwise doesn’t have access to equids. Horses and rural life are becoming more and more of a luxury, and casual encounters with them happen less frequently than in recent history. By inviting non-horse-people to meet your animals, you’ll give them an opportunity they probably don’t have otherwise. Who knowsÑyou might just change someone’s life.
