Twenty-three horses are receiving rehabilitative care after being removed from a farm in Woodstock, Vermont.

Gina Brown, executive director of the Spring Hill Horse Rescue in Clarendon, Vermont, said personnel from her agency assisted the Woodstock Police Department is removing the horses from a farm operated by Marjatta Lavin on Nov. 13. All the horses were malnourished, she said.

Brown said the horses were subsequently placed in the care of the Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society in Windsor, Vermont. Gina McAllister, spokeswoman for the humane society, said at the time of the removal the horses ranged in body condition from 1.5 to 4.5 on the Henneke Scale. The animals are receiving rehabilitative care at the Green Mountain Horse Association, in South Woodstock, Vermont., she said.

Woodstock Police Chief Robbie Blish said Lavin was charged with 10 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty, “but there is still a lot of investigation to be done, so there could be more charges made later
