Equine Educational Sessions Back at MSU Ag Expo

Horse owners will find several sessions of interest at this year’s Ag Expo at Michigan State University (MSU), in East Lansing, Mich. Sessions will be presented by faculty and staff members from the MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center.

The following tours and educational sessions have been scheduled during Ag Expo, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 16 and 17, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 18.

MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center tours

MSU maintains the third-longest continuous Arabian breeding herd in the United States, with several nationally successful show horses born on the premises. These horses allow for teaching and demonstration with high quality animals, regardless of breed preference or interest. Daily tours of the MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center will allow for demonstration and interactive discussion on general horse care. Attention will also be given to pasture management and equine facility issues.

MSU Extension educator Tom Guthrie and MSU equine specialist Karen Waite, MS, will lead the tours at 9:30 a.m. and noon on July 16, 17, and 18, and 2:30 p.m. on July 16 and 17.

Horse Hay Production

With hay recently in limited supply, it is more important than ever to understand the process of making hay and the importance of maintaining a good relationship with hay producers.

Taylor Fabus, an instructor in the Department of Animal Science, will talk on this subject at Livestock Central at 11 a.m. on July 16, 17, and 18.

Equine Parasite Update

For the latest on equine parasites and deworming recommendations, visitors will want to check out the session by Judith Marteniuk, DVM, MS, associate professor in the Large Animal Clinic at MSU, at Livestock Central starting at 1 p.m. on July 16, 17, and 18.
