American Pharoah Wins Breeders’ Cup Classic, ‘Grand Slam’

The 3-year-old colt became the first Triple Crown winner to contest–and win–a Breeders’ Cup Classic race.

American Pharoah added a final victory to his storied career when he crossed the finish line six and a half lengths ahead of his nearest competitors in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Classic, held Oct. 31 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky.

With the win, American Pharoah became the first horse to win the ‘Grand Slam’—the Triple Crown and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in the same year. He was also the first Triple Crown winner to contest a Breeders’ Cup race.

The 3-year-old colt by Pioneerof the Nile and owned and bred by Zayat Stables, American Pharoah and jockey Victor Espinoza led throughout the race and completed the 1 ¼ mile contest in 2:00.07. Effinex finished second and Honor Code closed strong to finish third.

“We were hoping for a performance like this,” said Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert after the race. “What a horse! I’ll never see another one like him
