UCD Announces New Masters Degree in Applied Equine Science

The University College Dublin (UCD) School of Agriculture and Food Science, in Ireland, has today (May 2) announced details of a new taught masters program in applied equine science which will commence in September 2013.

The "MSc Applied Equine Science" will be coordinated by Emmeline Hill, PhD, a researcher in equine genomics. The new program will provide advanced education and training in the application of the sciences underpinning best practice in horse husbandry and management, and will enable the development of key transferrable skills.

There is a growing demand for graduates in equine science to contribute higher skills for the international horse industries and this course will prepare students for business innovation and job creation opportunities in the Thoroughbred and other equine industries.

Graduates from this program will gain an understanding of the nature and challenges facing the equine industries, will have the ability to apply knowledge of equine science in a practical setting, and take advantage of developments in scientific technologies as they arise.

A major component of the program will be a six-month research placement with opportunities for students to work closely with academic researchers in UCD’s School of Veterinary Medicine and School of Agriculture and Food Science. Six leading industry organisations or companies—Festina Lente, Horse Sport Ireland, The Irish Equine Centre, Stable Labs, Equinome, and Equilume—have also agreed to host research students.

Commenting on the new program Hill said, “Equine research and innovation at University College Dublin will underpin teaching on the new program. We are delighted that as well as UCD academic researchers, six leading industry organisations or companies have also agreed to host research students, providing a unique opportunity for students to work with leading equine professionals during their studies.”

Application to the program will be competitive and students can now apply online now at www.ucd.ie/apply.
