Mud can be a farm management headache for horse owners. Aside from being challenging to work in, it can also cause or contribute to equine health problems. So how do you minimize the mud on your horse property?

In last week’s online poll, we asked readers if they have any mud management projects in the works for their horse farm this fall. More than 500 people responded, and we’ve tallied the results!

Of the 545 respondents, 175 (32%) said they would add gravel and/or sand to high-traffic areas on their farm, and 102 people (19%) said they need to remove organic material (manure, fallen tree leaves, etc.) from paddocks. Another 76 respondents (14%) said they would install French drains on their property, while 73 individuals (13%) said they will clean and/or install gutters on barns and shelters. Only 17 people (3%) indicated they have plans to build livestock-safe bridges over waterways, and 24 respondents (4%) have other projects planned this fall. The remaining 78 respondents (14%) do not have any mud-management projects planned this fall.
