In December 2015, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Burns District, in Oregon, announced the availability of a draft environmental assessment (EA) for mare sterilization research at Oregon’s Wild Horse Corral Facility in Hines. In cooperation with Oregon State University, the BLM is proposing to investigate the safety and efficacy of three separate methods of surgical sterilization of wild horse mares: ovariectomy via colpotomy, tubal ligation, and hysteroscopically-guided laser ablation of the oviduct papilla.

The BLM has decided to extend the comment period one week to Feb. 10.

Comments can be mailed or faxed to the BLM Burns Office at the address below, or submitted by email to blm_or_bu_mareresearchea@blm.gov. Entire comments—including personal identifying information—could be published as part of the EA and decision record process. Copies of the draft EA are available for review at the BLM Burns District Office during regular business hours, or online at https://eplanning.blm.gov/epl-front-office
