More than 500 attendees from 49 countries attended the 2013 World Equine Veterinary Association (WEVA) Congress, held in Budapest, Hungary, Oct. 3-5. Hosted by the Hungarian Association of Equine Practitioners and the World Organization of Hungarian Veterinarians, the Congress featured more than 30 invited speakers, more than 160 poster presentations, and more than 40 oral abstract presentations. Congress proceedings will be available through in the near future.

Congress highlights included:

  • Dominique Votion, DVM, PhD, from Belgium's University of Liege, received the Merial Applied Research Award for her work on atypical myopathy (an often fatal disorder involving the sudden onset of acute muscle pain and damage). Jean-Christophe Thibault of Merial and incoming WEVA President David Hodgson, BVSc, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, FACSM, presented the award.
  • The Congress' reproduction sessions were named "The Dr. Michelle LeBlanc Lectures" in memory of the renowned theriogenologist who passed away earlier this year. During the sessions, Pat McCue, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACT (Colorado State University); Giorgio Ricardi, DVM (Italian Association of Equine Veterinarians); and Sandro Barbacini, DVM (WEVA board member), presented current information on equine reproduction.
  • Ann Dwyer, DVM, and Bernhard Spiess, DVM, Dipl. ACVO, ECVO, instructed an ophthalmology wet lab on Oct. 2.
  • The Mexican Equine Association will host the 2015 Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Also at the Congress, WEVA thanked immediate past board members Ekaterina Zabegina, DVM, DBSc, PhD (Russia), and Neimar Roncati, DVM (Brazil), for their service and welcomed several new board members including:

  • Bianca Schwarz, DVM, DrMedVet, Dipl. ECEIM (Germany and Young WEVA);
  • Chris Riggs, BVSc, PhD, DEO, Dipl. ECVS, MRCVS (Hong Kong/China);
  • Maria Paz Zuniga Barrera, DVM (Chile); and
  • Kirill Manuilov, DVM (Russia and YoungWEVA).

In addition to Hodgson and Barbacini (Program Chair for the Guadalajara 2015 Congress, Italy), WEVA board members include:

  • Ravi Reddy, BVSc, MRCVS (Senior Vice President, India);
