Massachusetts law enforcement authorities are investigating a possible bear attack on horses residing in a pasture in East Brookfield.

Katie Gronendyke, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, said state environmental police answered a call on April 25 from an owner reporting that her two horses had been involved in a wild animal attack sometime during the previous night. An examination of the animals revealed that a both had sustained neck wounds that required veterinary treatment, Gronendyke said. An inspection of the pasture where the horses were located at the time of the attack revealed hair, blood, and a partial bear track, she said.

“The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife are following up with the (horses’) owners,” Gronendyke said. “Right now the environmental police are not confirming that the incident was a bear attack.”

The case remains under investigation
