The lecture, "Equine Piroplasmosis: Therapeutics and Immunity" was presented by Robert Mealey, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, associate professor of immunology and infectious diseases in Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology at the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. During the lecture, Mealey shared Robert Mealey, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, of Washington State University shares his team’s research on equine piroplasmosis, a disease spread through the transfer of blood; naturally, it is spread by certain species of ticks, however it can also be spread by the reuse of needles, syringes, and other blood-contaminated equipment that has not been sanitized between uses.

"I want to give an overview of equine piroplasmosis," Mealey said during the lecture. "I’ll talk a little about the therapeutics, especially in the horses in Texas associated with the outbreak in 2009. Then I’ll give an overview of some of the work we’ve been doing to try to characterize immune responses of Theileria equi."
