Authorities are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a horse presumably slaughtered for meat, then dumped in an embankment near West Palm Beach, Fla.

Capt. David Walesky, operations manager for Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, said that on June 10 a passerby reported finding bags containing animal remains along an embankment in Loxahatchee. Further examination revealed that the bags contained the remains of an approximately 10- to 12-year-old horse, apparently slaughtered for meat, Walesky said.

“The horse’s legs were severed above the knee, the shoulders were missing along with the entire rib cage and backstraps, and the tongue was missing,” Walesky said. “The hooves and the head were in the bag.”

The slaughtered horse bore no identifying tattoos. Walesky declined to comment on whether or not the horse or its remains were brought into Palm Beach County from another location
