Illinois EHV-1: Horses Recovering at Boarding Stable

Three horses were euthanized at the EHV-1 affected farm while the remaining affected horses are recovering.

Horses at a boarding stable in northeastern Illinois are recovering after equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) was first confirmed at the farm in early March, according to a state animal health official.

Illinois State Veterinarian Mark Ernst, DVM, told The Horse via e-mail March 20 that three horses residing at the farm had been euthanized early in the course of the outbreak.

"All remaining affected horses are responding to treatment and are recovering," he said. "The last febrile horse at the stable was reported on March 14."

In his e-mail, Ernst said that because the outbreak occurred at a private boarding stable, the Department of Agriculture has not released the number of horses affected or individualized information regarding specific animals
