Thoroughbred trainer Gary Contessa is encouraging dialogue about a possible fund designed to help retired racehorses out of feedlots.

When Contessa bought and trained the horse Seal Team Six for Wounded Warrior Stables, he had no idea that the son of Distorted Humor might end up in a New Jersey auction house. Asking price: $500.

But that’s exactly what happened: Ironically, the horse who fetched $240,000 at the May 2013 Timonium 2 Year Olds In Trainig sale found himself in a feedlot on Veterans’ Day.

But via Facebook and his friend Tara Cochran, Contessa became aware that his horse had been given up by the woman to whom he’d entrusted the beautiful colt in 2014. At Cochran’s request, Contessa got. By 5 p.m. on Nov. 12, Contessa had purchased Seal Team Six. Trainer Tom Foley offered to take the colt first to Maryland for quarantine, then to Virginia where the horse will start his new career in the equestrian world
