Earlier this year, for the first time in seven years, an Arizona horse tested positive for rabies. The confirmed case emphasized the need for animal health professionals to engage efforts to inform area horse owners about disease prevention.

The Arizona Department of Agriculture reported the case in April, and the domestic horse from Nogales, located in Santa Cruz County, had to be euthanized. Reports indicated that the horse had not been vaccinated.

On hearing about the Santa Cruz County rabies case, Betsy Greene, PhD, of the University of Arizona, said many horse owners had questions. The advice she gave? Don’t panic. "Rabies is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be passed between animals and humans," she cautioned. "However, prevention is much better than panic."

Well before the case was diagnosed, University of Arizona Cooperative Extension experts Greene and Ashley Wright had been working on a new resource for the prevention of rabies in livestock.
