Poll Recap: Boarding and Riding Horses During Winter

Like it or not, winter is rapidly approaching. For some horse owners the cold and snowy weather means less riding time. For others, like those residing in warm climates and those with access to a covered or indoor riding arena, riding routines don’t change much. Which boat are you in?

Last week, we asked our readers if they keep their horse at a barn with an indoor or covered arena during the winter months. A total of 1,300 people responded and we’ve tallied the results!

Of the 1,300 respondents, 558 people (43%) said they keep their horse at home without an indoor or covered arena during the winter. Another 279 respondents (21%) said they board their horse during winter at a facility with an indoor or covered arena, and 162 individuals (12%) board their horses at a facility without an indoor or covered arena. Some 141 respondents (11%) said they keep their horses at home during the winter where they also have an indoor or covered arena. An additional 122 people (9%) do not need an indoor arena and the remaining 38 respondents (3%) said they had other arrangements for their horse during the winter months.
