Several additional horses have tested positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV) at the Fair Grounds Race Course, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The index case, a 2-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, stabled in Barn 14 developed a fever without neurologic signs on Dec. 20, 2016. The horse responded to systematic treatment until Dec. 25, when he developed neurologic signs. He was euthanized on Dec. 26.

Subsequently, on Dec. 30, 2016, another horse residing in Barn 14 spiked a fever and was placed in quarantined isolation,” the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported. That horse tested positive for neuropathogenic EHV-1 via blood and nasal lavage samples.

The next day, a horse in Barn 36 spiked a fever and developed mild hind-limb deficits and nystagmus (involuntary eyeball movement). The horse was placed in quarantined isolation and Barn 36 was quarantined, the EDCC said. The horse tested positive for nonneuropathogenic EHV on blood and nasal samples
