The embattled operator of the International Society for the Preservation of Mustangs and Burros (ISPMB) sanctuary in South Dakota has just weeks to rehome hundreds of animals that were impounded by law enforcement authorities last month.

In October, former ISPMB employee Colleen Burns accused sanctuary operator Karen Sussman of maltreating horses at the facility and alleged that 30 animals had died of malnutrition. Sussman denied the accusations.

The mustangs, burros, and other horses residing at the sanctuary were subsequently impounded and placed in Dewey and Ziebach County authorities’ care. Sussman voluntarily agreed to the impoundment. Under the court order, the animals remain on ISPMB property, but Sussman is relieved of their care. She had not been charged in connection with the case.

Dewey County Sheriff Les Mayor said that, as of Nov. 11, more than $80,000 has been spent on the animals’ care
