A Florida couple is facing multiple animal cruelty charges in connection with the February seizure of 17 horses in their care.

On Feb. 5, the Manatee County Sheriff's Department confiscated nine horses and about 300 other allegedly malnourished animals from a Bradenton, Fla., sanctuary owned and operated by Alan and Sheree Napier. On Feb. 10 another eight horses were taken from another property belonging to the Napiers in Myakka City, Fla. The horses were taken to the Whispering Ranches Feed in Myakka City; many of the horses were allegedly emaciated, said Whispering Ranches operator Beth Shuttleworth.

Manatee County Sheriff's Office records indicate that Alan and Sheree Napier were each charged with 15 counts of animal torture with intent on April 17. Alan Napier was also charged with one count of employing a solicitation device to defraud.

Attorney Michael Perry, who is representing the Napiers in the criminal case, was unavailable for comment
