New WNV Cases in California, Kentucky, Minnesota Horses

Two of the three newly confirmed horses were unvaccinated. The third has an unknown vaccination history.

Animal health officials in California, Kentucky, and Minnesota have confirmed additional cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in horses in those states.

California—The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) reported that a 10-year-old Quarter Horse gelding from Shasta County tested positive for WNV on Sept. 22. The horse, whose vaccination status is unknown, was displaying neurologic signs, but is reportedly recovering, the CDFA said.

Thus far in 2016, 19 horses have tested positive for WNV in the following counties: Calaveras, Fresno (2 cases), Merced, Riverside, Sacramento (3 cases), San Diego, San Joaquin (6 cases), Shasta, Sutter (2 cases), and Ventura. Seven of those 19 horses died or were euthanized.

“Seventeen of the positive horses were not current on their WNV vaccinations and two horses had unknown vaccination status,” the CDFA said
