South Carolina Man Indicted for Animal Cruelty

A South Carolina man is facing a 5-count indictment for allegedly maltreating more than 20 Arabian horses at his Calhoun County farm.

Earlier this year personnel from the Calhoun County, South Carolina, Sheriff’s Office responded to several calls from residents complaining about the condition of a herd of Arabian horses in St. Matthews. After an investigation, the horses’ owner Ronald Hevener was arrested on eight counts of ill-treatment to animals and instructed to improve the animals’ condition. In May, sheriff’s deputies returned and with, the land owners’ permission, rescued all 29 horses in place.

Hevener was subsequently arrested on nine counts of ill-treatment of animals.

On Aug. 28, a Calhoun County grand jury handed down a five-count indictment accusing Hevener of ill-treatment to animals
