A Louisiana man has been arrested for allegedly starving and shooting a pair of horses and maltreating two others.

Red River Parish, Louisiana, Sheriff Glen Edwards said deputies responded to a report earlier this month regarding two horses found wandering near a highway in Coushatta, Louisiana. Both horses had been shot in their heads, he said.

On April 5, the wounded horses were placed in the care of the Four Forks Shelter horse rescue in Keithville, Louisiana. Rescue spokeswoman Virginia Wheeler said both horses were also allegedly malnourished and dehydrated.

“The two wounded horses are receiving wound care under veterinarian supervision and are healing,” she said
