Three hundred fifty off-the-track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) trained only to race entered during the first months of 2015. They are from 44 states, Canada, and England, and their trainers are preparing them to compete in one or two of 10 riding disciplines. This event has inspired a $2.5 million investment in the care and training of 350 horses, leaving each with an education that will secure its future. It’s the 2015 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, taking place Oct. 23-25 at the Kentucky Horse Park, in Lexington, and tickets are on sale now

Horses will perform before judges on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning in dressage, show jumping, show hunter, eventing, competitive trail, barrel racing, fox hunting, polo, ranch work, and freestyle. A schedule and venue map will be posted in the future on the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) website.

Ticket prices include:

  • General Admission—Free Free general admission includes Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning access to all ten competition disciplines, the sponsor fair in the covered arena, and the Makeover Marketplace.
  • The Finale—Tickets $15 On Sunday afternoon from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the covered arena the top three scorers in each discipline will compete for their $5,000 discipline titles. From among the 10 winners a panel of racing celebrities and the crowd will select the horse that best demonstrates the trainability and talent of the OTTB, awarding it the $10,000 title of America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred.
  • The Seminars—Tickets $25 Ten seminars will be offered in the Kentucky Horse Park’s Visitor Center and the covered arena’s Club Lounge. Ticket buyers will receive wrist bands allowing them access to all seminars. Seminar topics will include soundness issues and prepurchase exams, health management of your OTTB, selling or placing your Thoroughbred, starting and managing your aftercare organization, a trainers’ forum, what racehorses know, working the backside and lessons from CANTER, picking prospects, the British model (Retraining of Racehorses), and Thoroughbred makeovers for a living. Speakers and schedule will be announced at a later date.
  • Magazine Launch Party—Tickets $25 Join us Friday evening in the visitor center from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. for a party to celebrate the launch of Off-Track Thoroughbred Magazine, a collaboration between RRP and The Horse Media Group.

Makeover Marketplace
Nearly 200 of the 350 Thoroughbred Makeover horses will be available for sale or adoption. Each will be listed in our online catalog with photos, videos, training reports, and results of observation by a veterinarian upon arrival. Identify the horses that meet your needs, watch them compete, visit them in the stables, ride them under supervision of the seller, engage an on-site or nearby veterinarian to conduct a pre-purchase exam, and take home your own Thoroughbred Makeover graduate. Neither RRP nor its sponsors will be a party to any transactions that take place
