New York Horse Owners Urged to Minimize West Nile Virus Risk

New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball is encouraging horse owners in New York state to take proactive measures to reduce the risk of West Nile virus (WNV).

There has been one confirmed equine WNV case in the state so far this year. Samples tested by the New York State Department of Health confirmed an 8-year-old stallion from Cayuga County was infected.

“We are approaching the time of year when the risk of West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases goes up significantly,” Ball said. “Taking simple, proactive steps to protect yourself and your animals can be extremely effective in reducing the chance of getting ill.”

While infected mosquitoes can pass West Nile virus to humans, horses, and other animals, an infected horse cannot spread the disease to other animals. Likewise, humans are not susceptible to contracting West Nile when handling a horse that is infected
