I have found that my horse warms up better with a few minutes of longeing and in-hand work.

Occasionallywhen I don't have time to ride or when he seems a little high. keep it minimal.

5/6/2013 10:37:46 PM

or when my horse is being terrible for riding, so we do something they are good at

5/6/2013 8:27:44 PM

It can take the edge off a young horse

5/6/2013 8:16:31 PM

I lunge when training a young horse and before riding one tht might be high to calm down

5/6/2013 1:42:09 PM

It's completely over-used. If you need to lunge your horse before every ride, that's a problem

5/6/2013 5:12:15 AM

As an alternative to riding and before riding to help them warm up and for attitude adjustment.

5/5/2013 7:15:55 PM

Not only just on one circle! Incl. straight on/cavalettis/dual activity yello-blue work.

5/5/2013 8:37:47 AM

it also depends on the horse - settles one horse, yet over-stimulates the other.

5/4/2013 11:31:54 AM

I never longe my horses....they do not need it. It makes one more hyper and the other is always calm

5/3/2013 5:02:40 PM

I prefer to ride, but it really helps to develop muscle strength and topline in my youngsters.

5/3/2013 2:40:43 PM

I always longe before a ride to relax my horse, warm up and to see how my horse is feeling

5/3/2013 10:01:16 AM

You can never have enough ground-work done, that is,, if its done right. and gets coparation

5/3/2013 9:57:03 AM

I belive horses are routinly over lounged Longing is a tool, but horses can be overdone.

5/2/2013 10:30:53 PM

also when I detect my horse is feeling very energetic

5/2/2013 9:24:51 PM

I always check my horses' soundness and mood for a few minutes by lounging 5 min.

5/2/2013 9:02:52 PM

You need an option that says "Never", I ride mine - no need to longe

5/2/2013 4:19:43 PM

not every time although quite often to get them focused

5/2/2013 2:53:35 PM

allows my girl to be silly if she needs too

5/2/2013 1:12:12 PM

lONGEING prior to riding sets the proper frame of mind for both rider and horse.

5/2/2013 1:01:51 PM

depends on the needs of my critters. sometimes it is best to longe - better out than in!

5/2/2013 12:54:10 PM

I don't ride my 30 year old anymore but he still has an abundance of energy so longing gets mixed in

5/2/2013 11:28:18 AM

Sometimes before to warm up or get a feel for how she feels and how shes moving that day.

5/2/2013 10:25:07 AM

helps with our communication, cold back, saddle issues, improving canter, etc...

5/2/2013 9:15:33 AM

She's a hyper Arab and needs to vent before riding and longing allows her to disperse and buck a bit

5/2/2013 8:52:13 AM

I longe for balance, over poles to build strength and to see where their mind is at that day

5/2/2013 8:15:37 AM

I lounge when my horse is feeling frisky!

5/1/2013 11:43:06 PM

seldom - though I do long-line.

5/1/2013 10:24:38 PM

I have young 'green' horse, get a read on how he is feeling, get his attention, get him in working m

5/1/2013 9:53:59 PM

just for a minute before I ride my green horse to see where his head is.

5/1/2013 12:45:01 PM

5/1/2013 11:40:11 AM

5/1/2013 10:14:53 AM

Pushed for time especially in winter.

5/1/2013 9:19:56 AM

5/1/2013 7:40:31 AM

With tack and side reins is good addition to training, but not too often or for too long at a time

5/1/2013 7:26:01 AM

Always longe flighty Arab, mare before riding. Longe small App once a week to improve quality of pac

5/1/2013 6:46:46 AM

not at all. It's too repetitive and breaks down their joints

4/30/2013 11:48:42 PM

free games in a round pen is better if I have access

4/30/2013 10:03:14 PM

...which is almost never !

4/30/2013 9:55:35 PM

People don't understand the value of correct longeing. Getting the bucks out is not longeing!

4/30/2013 9:33:13 PM

seldom - I would rather work a horse at liberty in a roundpen if I am schooling, sometimes I pony

4/30/2013 8:42:59 PM

Still green. Longing helps him settle and lets me judge his attitude.

4/30/2013 8:15:38 PM

4/30/2013 8:02:36 PM

I never longe my horse - he doesn't need it

4/30/2013 7:46:37 PM

Very rarely, and not for long. Hard on horse's joints, etc.a and horse very straight hind end build

4/30/2013 7:39:49 PM

Not more than twice around without asking for some kind of transition. More teaching than wear-out

4/30/2013 7:37:50 PM

I rarely lunge unless my horse is acting spooky

4/30/2013 7:36:27 PM

he's a 2 half year old youngster getting ready 2 break

Never- it's bad for their joints.

4/30/2013 7:18:28 PM

Don't longe very often at all

4/30/2013 6:54:10 PM

I longe to get my horse's mind in order; however, never longer than 15 min.

4/30/2013 6:35:12 PM

It lets me see how they are moving as well as their mood and energy level before I mount up.

4/30/2013 6:03:45 PM

I longe my mare when she appears fresh, it only takes about 10 minutes and she is ready to ride.

4/30/2013 6:00:36 PM

A lot of time, it will be determined by how frisky he's feeling.

4/30/2013 5:57:10 PM

I usually only longe before a jumping lesson and/or before a Hunter or Dressage Show.

4/30/2013 5:55:49 PM

Longing on cooler days as my gelding is a bit cold backed.

I longe because my horse is too green to ride & she needs muscling before I can start riding her

4/30/2013 5:29:35 PM

I longe for a short time before each ride to get them thinking and listening to me.

4/30/2013 4:51:22 PM

Used to longe before every ride when my mare was young, but now she is 23, and no longer needs it!

4/30/2013 11:36:29 AM

It gets so hot in Arizona during the summer, I longe/do ground work in the eves in lieu of riding

4/30/2013 11:01:56 AM

My saddle started causing back pain in my horse, so lunging is her exercise until I find new saddle

4/30/2013 9:44:04 AM

Before some rides to help loosen them up.

4/30/2013 8:19:19 AM

my horse gets easily bored with ringwork so I limit this to short 10-20 min sessions

4/30/2013 8:17:59 AM

Only for training, not as a substitute for exercise nor eliminate excess energy

4/30/2013 12:11:03 AM

When young my mare was longed before every ride - no longer as she is 26
