The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada’s Elko District, Wells Field Office, began a wild horse water bait trap gather July 20 with placement of corrals near the Wood Hills area (a non-herd management area, or HMA). Actual gathering will commence once the corrals are in place and the wild horses become accustomed.

A gather information hotline has been established at 775/861-6700. A recorded message will provide gather activities and updated gather schedules. Gather reports will also be posted on BLM’s Elko District website at https://on.doi.gov/1OcxfY2.

Due to this type of operation (luring wild horses and burros to bait), spectators and viewers will be prohibited as it will impact the contractor’s ability to capture wild horses and burros. Only essential gather operation personnel will be allowed at the trap site during operations. However, to accommodate public viewing, an escorted trip has been scheduled for July 22. Interested visitors are requested to sign up prior to arriving by calling and leaving a message on the gather information hotline.

The contractor for this gather is Warner Livestock. Removed wild horses will be transported to the Delta and Axtell Wild Horse and Burro Facilities in Utah, where they will be prepared for BLM’s adoption program. This gather operation was reviewed as part of the Wood Hills Determination of NEPA Adequacy (DNA) released June 5. The DNA is available at https://on.doi.gov/1dMOB2a
