Hay Stores Sparked Fire at UC Davis Horse Barn

Hay was destroyed when fire swept through a storage structure, but an adjacent horse barn was untouched by the blaze.

Hay bales were destroyed when fire swept through a storage structure at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), but an adjacent horse barn was untouched by the blaze.

Andy Fell, UC Davis spokesman, said hay stored in a pole barn located next to a horse barn at the university’s campus caught fire on Aug. 23. There was no damage to the horse barn and no horses were injured in the blaze, he said.

Fell said UC Davis Fire and Police Department responded to the fire and, after an investigation, the UC Davis fire marshal ruled that the blaze began inside the hay.

“Basically, it was natural causes, as sometimes happens with hay,” Fell said
