The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has published the sixth edition of the Health and Safety in the Racing and Breeding Industry guide, commonly known as the "Red Book," the group announced Oct. 31.

The guide helps the racing and breeding Industry meet the requirements of health and safety law as well as incorporate good practice and procedures. All licensed and permitted trainers will receive a copy of the guide, as will all stud farms registered with the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA). To coincide with the publication of the new edition, the BHA has arranged a series of seminars with practical guidance on the implementation of the relevant health and safety requirements.

New to this edition:

  • The design and layout is easier to use than previous editions, with sections enabling the guide to be adapted to individual yards.
  • It contains the framework for preparing the documents required to be legally compliant with health and safety laws.
  • It outlines the new laws about the reporting of workplace accidents.

The book has been produced by the BHA, TBA, and Taylor Vinters solicitors, who have considerable experience in the racing and breeding Industry, with industry support from the National Trainers Federation (NTF), British Racing School (BRS) and Northern Racing College, National Stud, Racing Welfare, and the National Association of Stable Staff
