Two men found guilty of animal cruelty last year for allegedly overworking and neglecting four horses during a two-month pack trip in the mountains of Montana are back on trial this week, following their district court appeal.

Craig Heydon and his son, Curtis Heydon, of Atlanta, Ga., were found guilty of 21 counts of animal cruelty more than a year ago. Both were fined and sentenced to jail time.

The Heydons were charged in September 2008, after two riders found one of their horses collapsed, emaciated, and covered in sores alongside a trail in the Selway-Bitterroot area of Montana. A sheriff’s deputy later found three more of their horses in poor condition in Stevensville, Mont.
