Botulism: A Perfect Killer

Botulism is a disease caused by a deadly toxin; it strikes swiftly, but it can easily be prevented.  The disease is caused by the toxins that the bacterium Clostridium botulinum produces. Horses’ best chance at survival lies in being treated with antitoxin as quickly as possible. This makes it necessary to recognize the clinical signs that are suggestive of the disease and make the diagnosis on that basis alone.

This free report gives an overview of the lethal and devastating disease. Prompt veterinary intervention, especially administration of the correct antitoxin increases the odds that the outcome will be favorable once the disease is diagnosed. Horses are highly susceptible to botulism toxins, but vaccination and proper feed/water management can help prevent the illness.
