Two Racehorses Die After Australia’s Melbourne Cup

Two racehorses have died after running in the Emirates Melbourne Cup, which took place Nov. 4 at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Statements from Racing Victoria's head of veterinary and equine welfare Brian Stewart, BVSc (Hons), MBA, indicate that both the betting favorite Admire Rakti and Araldo died following completion of the race.

Admire Rakti, a 6-year-old stallion trained in Japan, collapsed and died in his stall, Stewart said.

“The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, although the circumstances of the horse’s passing are very rare," he said. "A post-mortem will be conducted at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Hospital as is standard practice
