Kentucky Confirms Second Equine WNV Case for 2017

The Kentucky State Veterinarian’s office has announced that a horse from Franklin County has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). This is the second equine WNV case confirmed in the commonwealth this year.

In a statement Kentucky Equine Programs manager E.S. "Rusty" Ford said the case was confirmed July 27.

The 18-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse mare presented on July 24 with muscle fasciculation (twitching, predominantly on and above both front shoulders), mild lip paresis, inappetence, and reluctant to move. She has no WNV vaccination history.

Ford said that, as of July 17, “the patient is described as being in a stable condition with some improvement noted
