The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported Aug. 31 that a horse from Brevard County, Florida, tested positive for rabies on Aug. 30.

"The adult mare had no previous vaccine history and had not been off the premises in over a year,” the EDCC said. “Clinical signs began on Aug. 26 and the horse was euthanized for humane reasons the same day.”

This is the first confirmed rabies case in Brevard County and the second confirmed case in Florida for 2016.

Rabies—a zoonotic disease that can be spread from animals to humans—is caused by a lyssavirus that affects the neurologic system and salivary glands. Horses are exposed most commonly through the bite of another rabid animal
