The second neurologic horse that was undergoing testing from Barn 26 at Turfway Park was found to be positive for equine herpesvirus type 1, noted Rusty Ford of the Kentucky State Veterinarian’s office the afternoon of Dec. 29. He said there are no other herpesvirus cases pending testing at either of the major equine hospitals in Lexington, Ky., where the two Turfway horses were sent from the track for treatment.

Results from testing done Dec. 28 on the remaining horses in Barn 26 from Turfway Park should be available this weekend, noted Ford. Each horse remaining in Barn 26 underwent a physical exam last night, and none were found to have any abnormalities that would indicate clinical signs of the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus.

Another horse in training was tested at one of the hospitals because of possible hind end lameness or ataxia, but it was negative for herpesvirus. The attending veterinarian told Ford that horse had chronic rear end problems, which is not consistent with a herpesvirus infection
