Tour: UC Davis' Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital

Here's a look into the equine health and research programs at the University of California, Davis.

University of California, Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital

The University of California, Davis, (UC Davis) Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital’s (VMTH) equine facilities include a 50-stall barn, a 10-stall intensive care unit (ICU), a neonatal ICU, and an infectious disease ICU that is isolated from the main facilities to prevent the spread of infection. The hospital also houses several examination and surgery rooms.

Dentistry Services

UC Davis' medicine and dentistry services offer a team approach to patient care, focusing on a goal of providing the highest standard of compassionate veterinary care to ill or injured horses. With a high volume caseload, specialists have gained valuable experience in diagnosing and treating unusual and complex cases.

Large Animal Ultrasound

The VMTH is one of few veterinary hospitals in the country with a service dedicated exclusively to large animal ultrasound and staffed by faculty specifically trained in its use. The wide and varied caseload at the VMTH provides the faculty with experience and expertise in all areas of equine ultrasound.

Equine Research and Clinical Trials

UC Davis is proud of its history of translating equine research into clinical applications. Alonso Guedes, DVM, MS, PhD, Dipl. ACVA, seen here with laminitis survivor Hulaholla, says he's seeing positive results in a clinical trial of a new drug to treat the deadly hoof disease.

Diagnostic Imaging Service

The VMTH’s specialty services are supported by several ancillary services such as its diagnostic imaging service, which provides MRI, computed tomography, radiography, and fluoroscopy for equine patients.

Board-Certified Anesthesiologists

The VMTH is the only veterinary facility in northern California with multiple board-certified anesthesiologists. Because horses sometimes try to get up too early while recovering from anesthesia (thereby predisposing themselves to potentially fatal injuries), UC Davis anesthesiologists have developed options for more gradual, controlled recoveries.

Regenerative Medicine Laboratory

The Regenerative Medicine Laboratory at UC Davis offers a clinical application of stem cell research at the VMTH directed toward the treatment of orthopedic injuries and joint disease in horses.

Equine Athletic Performance Laboratory

UC Davis’ Equine Athletic Performance Laboratory includes an equine exercise clinic with a treadmill for hospital patient examinations and an equine exercise laboratory with a specialized research treadmill. The performance lab fosters a collaborative approach to treating equine injuries or illnesses. Veterinarians from several disciplines--such as biomechanics, orthopedics, imaging, and surgery--might convene to evaluate the horse and develop a treatment strategy.
