The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for poaching a wild burro in California’s Ivanpah Valley. The perpetrators unlawfully killed a burro, harvested the meat, and left the carcass in the desert. A biologist found the carcass while working at the Ivanpah Solar Energy Generation System project near the California/Nevada border. The burro was killed on public lands near the project site.

"Wild burros are protected under federal law and it is illegal to kill them," said Amy Dumas, wild horse and burro specialist for BLM California. "We are working with other agencies to bring the responsible parties to justice, and hope members of the public will provide us with helpful information."

Wild horses and burros are protected from capture, harassment, and death by the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. The act charges the BLM with managing wild horse and burro populations on public lands in balance with other range resources.

Anyone with information about this situation is asked to contact Chief Ranger Brad Baron at 760/326-7000. Information can be provided anonymously
