A New York man previously charged with fatally injuring a laminitic horse by riding it for several miles over paved roads is facing additional charges including animal cruelty, grand larceny, and failing to register as a sex offender.

In November, Donald Lane, of Schenevus, N.Y., was charged under New York state’s Agriculture and Market law with one count of misdemeanor injuring or torturing an animal for allegedly riding a barefoot laminitic horse over several miles from Schenevus to Oneonta, N.Y. During the incident, the horse sustained injuries so severe that it was consequently euthanized.

Lt. Douglas Brenner, of the Oneonta Police Department, said that in December, Lane was slated to appear in court on the charges, but never appeared. As a result, those charges remain pending, Brenner said.

Meanwhile, Brenner said that Otsego County law enforcement personnel arrested Lane on similar charges
