In trying to meet the city's budget crisis, Tulsa, Okla., Mayor Kathy Taylor cut the budget for the city's mounted police and ordered it disbanded. The outcry over concern for the fate of the horses resulted in a rescue effort that succeeded, according to tulsaworld.com.

The eight horses, which are mostly between 15-20 years old, could not legally be adopted by the mounted unit's officers, noted the article.

Hillcrest Foundation made a donation to the Tulsa Community Foundation that will allow the horses to be appraised and sold at "fair market value" to the latter foundation.

The Tulsa Community Foundation is seeking donations to help pay for the ongoing care at the nonprofits that will receive the horses
