Residents of Weatherford, Texas, who had gone back home after one evacuation kept watch Sunday on the Brazos River, which was rising again as flood gates were opened at overloaded upstream reservoirs.

The Brazos was expected to swell back up to around 26 feet, a foot above flood stage, after officials opened a fourth flood gate at Possum Kingdom Lake.

The river peaked above 27 feet Thursday (June 28), prompting Parker County to order a mandatory evacuation of 2,000 people. Everyone was allowed to return home by Saturday, but authorities encouraged them to seek higher ground again as the reservoir excess moved downstream today (Sunday, July 1).

“The next crest doesn’t appear that it’s going to be as bad as the first one,” Parker County spokesman Joel Kertok said. “We just need to keep an eye on it
