Heavy rains and swollen rivers caused flash floods in Texas, but no official equine evacuations have been ordered there. Still, horse owners in both Texas and Oklahoma worry that continued rainfall will lead to more flooding and the need to move themselves and their animals out of harm’s way.

On May 23, heavy rains began falling in Texas. Within a few days, rising river waters began to displace residents in and around Houston and rural areas nearby. Still, no official large animal evacuations were ordered by emergency management agencies there.

“We saw lots of cattle carcasses because the rivers rose so fast, but we have not seen any horses (displaced by the floods) and we’re not aware of horse evacuations,” said Mike Jones, emergency preparedness coordinator for Hays County, Texas. “Fortunately those waters receded quickly and people have reclaimed their land.”

Meanwhile in Oklahoma, flooding forced some horse owners to evacuate their animals to higher ground despite the fact that no official evacuations have been ordered, said Clayton McCook, DVM, MS, a racehorse veterinarian and founder of the Oklahoma Large Animal First Responders Group
