The Eastern Cape of Africa is experiencing an outbreak of African horse sickness. According to a report on  iol.co.za, 15 cases of African horse sickness have been reported in the last six weeks, with 11 horses dead.


African horse sickness is a vector-transmitted viral disease with a mortality rate of 90% in horses. It is spread via the Culicoides species of biting midges.


Despite the fact African horse sickness is a controlled disease and is required to reported, officials suspect that more horses have been ill and died during the current outbreak and have not been reported
