Horses Removed from King Fire Path

While firefighters battle the King Fire in California, more than 20 horses are receiving care at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds.

According to CalFire, a wildfire tracking service maintained by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the King Fire began burning on Sept. 13 and has burned 92,960 acres in El Dorado County. Jody Gray, El Dorado County Fair CEO, said the county fairgrounds began accepting animals removed from the fire zone on Sept. 14. Since then 22 horses have been brought to the fairgrounds, along with cows, goats, poultry, alpacas, and a llama.

Many of the horses were evacuated by volunteers from the South County Large Animal Rescue, Gray said. All of the horses are under the care of volunteers from that organization, she said.

“The organization actually removes animals from the fire zone and takes care of them here,” Gray said. “Also, some owners come to check on their animals or to just hang out with them
