Assisted Equine Reproduction Horse Course Archived

The latest Horse Course from the University's of Kentucky's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and Gluck Equine Research Center (presented by Pfizer Animal Health) is now available for viewing on

The presentation, "Approaches to Assisted Reproduction," was led by Rob Foss, DVM, an equine practitioner at Equine Medical Services in Columbia, Mo. Foss discussed equine reproductive technology, including oocyte transfer, embryo cryopreservation, in vitro oocyte maturation, in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, and more.

"When you talk about assisted reproductive techniques, it varies depending upon who you're talking to and what we're talking about," he said during the presentation. "In some places, assisted reproduction is artificial insemination. In my mind, (assisted reproduction) is going to be much more assisted (i.e., using oocyte transfer, embryo culture, or embryo cryopreservation)."

Foss explained a number of scientifically advanced assisted reproduction techniques, relayed how they work, and discussed what is known about each.
