Your horse needs water when he travels, but some water sources could harbor infectious disease. Here's how to minimize your horse's risk of contracting disease via water sources.

Biosecurity Risk: Communal water troughs are an effective mechanism for transmission of disease agents, especially when both resident horses and those at the facility for events have access to the same water sources.

  • High Biosecurity Risk—Using communal water troughs that available to all resident and event horses.

  • Medium Biosecurity Risk—Using streams or large water sources available to event horses.

  • Minimal Biosecurity Risk—Bringing and using individual water buckets for your own horses while at event grounds.

Biosecurity Fix: Avoid using communal water troughs during events, and pack a water bucket for each horse you bring to the facility. If communal water troughs are the only source at the facility, consider bringing water from home.

And as always, remember to provide a safe and healthy environment for your horse by practicing good biosecurity at your farm and while traveling
