Tattoo Charlie, a 15-hand bay Quarter Horse gelding, escaped from his pasture in Monroe County, N.Y. early on Aug. 7 after he and three pasturemates in the enclosure were spooked. The other horses were recovered, but Charlie–who was last seen in the Genesee River–has not been found.

According to his Idaho Alert that is posted at www.netposse.com/stolenmissing/missing_1/CharlieNYmissingAug06.htm, 8-year-old Charlie and one the other horses traveled through farmers’ fields along the Genesee River and eventually split up in a cornfield.

“The other horse got out of the cornfield and later was found in a neighboring field,” owner Lorie Croston reported in the alert, which she posted on Aug. 11. “Charlie’s tracks lead through the cornfield and ended where he jumped into the Genesee River. We have not yet located his exit point from the river, so he may still be on the Avon side or he may be have gone toward Caledonia or Scottsville (assuming he made it out of the river). We have searched the river between Rt 251 in Rush and Rte 5 in Avon by boat with no sign of him. We have also searched the area three times by air.”

The other two horses had escaped from another portion of the pasture and were caught in a different area
