The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office, concluded the Humboldt Herd Area (HA) wild horse gather on Feb. 5. A total of 303 wild horses were gathered from the range, located 10 miles northeast of Lovelock, Nevada.

“The goal was total removal of excess wild horses from the Humboldt HA,” said Jim Schroeder, Humboldt River field manager. "Due to finding more wild horses within the HA than anticipated, we were still able to have a safe and humane gather and removed the excess wild horses off the HA."

The gather area was comprised of 431,544 acres of private and public lands. The BLM says this removal will help prevent further deterioration of the range and water resources, as well as address safety issues on roads and private land issues.

The gathered animals were transported to the Palomino Valley Center near Reno, Nevada, and Oregon’s Wild Horse Corral Facility in Burns, where they will be prepared for the BLM adoption program. Horses not adopted will be placed in long-term pastures where they will be humanely cared for and retain their “wild” status and protection under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. The BLM does not sell or send any horses to slaughter
