An organization has sought to remedy the problem of large animals being dragged, strangled, drowned, or dropped during attempted rescues due to improper training of emergency responders for lage animal rescues.. USRider has produced a video to increase awareness of the need for correct rescue training and has made it available free to the public.

USRider, a member-based organization providing trailering assistance throughout North America with its Equestrian Motor Plan, has widely distributed the new safety video which focuses on large-animal rescue. The initial announcement of the video earlier in 2003 generated requests from 37 states. Since that time, more than 275 free copies have been distributed to the United States, Canada, Germany, and Argentina.

According to USRider, the video has been well received by the equine industry, and covers a broad spectrum of emergency situations including containment, up-righting trailers, lifting, and dragging horses, and water rescue and night rescue operations, the video has been distributed to numerous organizations and individuals across the nation. Videos have also been sent to Canada, Germany and Argentina.

Those that have requested the video include emergency medical technicians, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the American Horse Protection Association, horse councils, veterinarians, state departments of agriculture, animal welfare departments, humane societies, fire departments, libraries, colleges, and riding clubs and associations. Copying the video is encouraged. Several organizations have taken the initiative to reach a wide audience by playing the video on local cable television.

“We were very pleased and believe special recognition should go to the Kentucky Horse Council, which took the initiative to make 120 copies of the video to distribute to each county in the commonwealth,” said Mark Cole, managing member for USRider
