Horse Pelted With Paintballs, Then Abandoned

An elderly mare is receiving care at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s (Penn Vet) New Bolton Center after having been shot repeatedly with paintballs and abandoned in a stall at a New Holland, Pennsylvania, auction barn.

Kelly Smith of the Omega Horse Rescue, in Airville, Pennsylvania, said she was walking around the New Holland Sales Barn on March 14 when she spotted the horse in a holding area.

“But there was no owner, no nothing,” Smith said. “She just showed up.”

Smith called the veterinarian on duty, who determined the horse as a 20-year-old Appaloosa/Arabian-cross mare. The animal had been shot multiple times with a paintball gun, she said
