A former farm operator in New York has been charged with multiple animal cruelty counts for allegedly maltreating horses residing on a property she occupied in Suffolk County.

Suffolk County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SCSPCA) Director Roy Gross said that agency animal welfare personnel discovered 27 horses and ponies residing without adequate food or water at Abbess Farms in Calverton on April 29 after receiving a call from the Riverhead Police Department. Several allegedly maltreated goats, sheep, and pigs were also found on the property, which was the subject of a recent foreclosure, Gross said.

Rescue personnel used bolt cutters to remove one horse residing in a stall without access to food or water, and veterinarians diagnosed one pony removed from the scene with a severe eye injury necessitating surgery, Gross said.

Earlier this week the animals’ owner Marie Guerrera–also known as Marie Tooker–was charged with three counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty in connection with the alleged maltreatment of two horses and the pony, Gross said. Each count carries maximum penalties of up to one year in jail and fines up to $1,000. She is scheduled to appear in Southampton Town Justice Court on July 27, Gross said
