A man facing charges in North Dakota for mistreating his horses has been given a deferred sentence and fined in East Central District Court.

Nicholas Paul Bergquist, 59, of West Fargo, entered an Alford plea on Tuesday (Dec. 26) to a charge of cruelty to animals and a citation for keeping animals in an unhealthy or sanitary manner.

In an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges that sufficient evidence exists to convict.

East Central District Court Judge Wade Webb gave Bergquist a deferred one-year sentence and ordered him to pay $500 in fines
