The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky., plans to ask the state for more funding to improve roads before hosting the World Equestrian Games in 2010.

Park officials said they would ask lawmakers for an additional $10 million to $12 million. The money would be in addition to $2.4 million approved in the last legislative session for road improvements in the park, said John Nicholson, the park’s executive director.

If the funding is approved, some of it would be spent on widening portions of the entrance to the park, Nicholson said. It would also pay for construction of a looping road that would connect existing roads inside the park, as well as to upgrade a main road that cuts through the middle of the park so it could be converted into a pedestrian avenue during the games, Nicholson said.

Their usefulness will extend far beyond the games, he said
